Case Study #3:
Using Lean, Efficient Catalytic Infrared Technology
Cures Massive Components Quickly.

Two gas-fired catalytic infrared oven systems have reduced paint drying time for
Link-Belt Construction Equipment's crane and excavator weldments from 16 hours
to less than 30 minutes. Parts up to 50 feet in length and weighing up to 30,000 pounds are cured and dried 32 times faster than previously.

The two paint curing systems at Link-Belt's 400,000 sq. ft. North American headquarters facility, in Lexington, Kentucky, have operated since March, 1998.
They were engineered and manufactured by Catalytic Industrial Systems.

The project goal was to speed paint drying time in order to increase production
capacity and free-up production space used for indoor air drying.

The #1 catalytic infrared oven cures weldments including hydraulic crane booms, carriers, upper frames and outrigger beams, excavator lowers, uppers and booms.

The #2 catalytic infrared oven cures lattice crane booms, counterweights and
sheet metal parts for cabs and housings. Parts include booms 50’ long with
12’ cross-sections, and counterweights weighing 30,000 pounds.

Prior to the final oven designs, extensive testing was conducted in Catalytic's lab,
using Link-Belt's coatings, and weldments simulating those fabricated by Link-Belt. Verification that Catalytic's technology was capable of efficiently curing massive
parts was the major factor in deciding on the system, according to Paul Culler,
Manager of Assembly, Test & Paint Production Engineering.

Catalytic infrared oven systems generate long-wave infrared radiation which is
more readily absorbed by most materials than the shorter wave energy emitted
by alternative systems. The results are lower operating costs and faster,
higher quality finishes.
