Case Study #7:
Catalytic Infrared Ovens Reduce Fuel Use,
Air Movement Costs, Conveyor Requirements

Steelcase purchased five gas-fired catalytic ovens to dry components used
in wood furniture units, including desks, credenzas, cabinets and wardrobes.
Veneered, laminated wood panels receive a solvent or waterborne finish prior
to assembly. At various stages of cure, finish material and initial surface of
the panels are heated to 150 to 200°F.
Catalytic oven heat is long-wave infrared, which concentrates the heat on the
panel finishes, rather than the wood substrate. As a result, panels cool faster
and are ready for subsequent processing, according to Rich Peters,
Manufacturing Engineer Supervisor.
In the catalytic infrared ovens, gas is brought into contact with a catalytic
pad in the presence of air. The reaction generates infrared energy while
oxidizing the natural gas into carbon dioxide and water vapor. A few minutes
of preheating brings the system to starting temperature. When the reaction
begins, it is self-sustaining. The catalytic infrared system is flameless,
and Factory Mutual approved.
Catalytic infrared oven construction is modular. Infrared emitter panels can
be arranged to zone the heat as needed, concentrating it where required by
individual applications.
“Catalytic Industrial Systems was flexible enough to build any oven we needed
in terms of dimensions and BTU values. They also provided the opportunity
to test catalytic infrared heating technology on our finishes.” Rich Peters,
Manufacturing Engineer Supervisor
