Catalytic Infrared Gas-Fired Oven Accelerates
Powder Cure, Improves Process Control.

A gas-fired infrared oven has doubled the speed and throughput of
powder paint curing operations for Luxfer Gas Cylinders.

The new infrared oven system has enabled Luxfer to paint and cure all of its
products including the largest at 52” in length. It has also improved process
control and flexibility and increased energy efficiency in comparison with other
technologies, according to Mark Churchman, manufacturing engineer.

Luxfer purchased two additional Catalytic oven systems – a dry-off oven for the
plant's pre-paint washing operation and a flash-cure oven for liquid painting.

Luxfer Gas Cylinders is the world’s largest manufacturer of aluminum high
pressure gas cylinders. It manufacturers more than 80 models for scuba tanks,
medical oxygen tanks, tanks for exotic gases used in various specialty
industries, and carbon dioxide tanks for the beverage industry.

Luxfer considered four suppliers of catalytic infrared heating systems
before selecting Catalytic Industrial Systems.

"Catalytic was set up to test – and insisted on testing, which is one of strengths." Churchman videotaped the extensive lab tests at Catalytic's laboratory. He
also examined the company's overall operation, including quality assurance,
manufacturing efficiency, and on-time records– before making a decision.

The new catalytic infrared oven system provides several advantages.

1) Recirculation of heat prevents stratification within the oven.

2) Catalytic oven controls are exceptionally flexible.
Ovens can be zoned to suit product size and line speed.

3) Catalytic infrared ovens generate substantial ongoing energy savings.

Catalytic's gas-fired infrared heating technology is flameless, and produces
long-wave infrared radiation that is more readily absorbed by the materials
being heated than the shorter wave energy emitted by other systems.
This minimizes energy consumption.

The catalyst and electric preheat elements are contained in modular emitter
panels which can be assembled in a full range of sizes and configurations to
direct heat as required. Maintenance requirements are minimal, because
there are no moving parts, and no bulbs or tubes to replace.
